Poetry by Markus Hamence – June 2025, Adelaide SA
Just a kid, he kick off the shoes,
Dirt between the toes, chasing the morning dews,
A jungle, a forest, a field, a park,
Just the sky and the breeze – and all of nature’s hues.
He knows the back trails, the shortcut streams,
Finds four-leaf clovers like it’s routine,
Logs for benches, clouds for art,
Wild in spirit, but soft in heart.
Talks to the trees like old best mates,
Snaps leaf selfies, posts ‘em up late,
Collects stones, feathers, bits of the day,
Pockets full of earth’s own bouquet.
While the city hums, he slips away,
Into the green, where minds can stray,
No calendar, no inbox ping,
Just birds that chirp and branches that swing.
And at night, beneath wide open skies,
Counting stars with sleepy eyes,
Dreaming not of cars or toys –
Just the world itself – I’m a Nature Boy.
